SHE-UNITY SUPPORT
She-Unity Support is run by an experienced project manager who is supported by 9 peer volunteers.
How we work
Our volunteers are trained in all types of domestic abuse and to provide emotional support through learning computer skills. We plan to facilitate a safe and neutral place to talk about the experiences of BME women to peer supporters. Most of these women find themselves isolated due to the abuse and with no culturally competent services which would understand and support them.
We run 12 support groups over 6 months in a local community centre. Throughout this project a laptop will be made accessible for women, who wish to find information on different forms of help or to learn computer skills.
It has been well documented that BME women, have limited access to services due to a variety of reasons. One of these reasons is the language barrier and this project will encourage access to available services by giving information in different languages and, ultimately, equip these women to become independent financially, to be able to sustain themselves and their children long-term.

Our Planned Support group
She-Unity Supports offers empowerment which will give BME women new skills and knowledge, helping them and their families to access services and employment, enhance their local community, realise their full potential and make a positive contribution to their community and local economy.
Our planned support group activities include:
Advice, advocacy and counselling
Basic skills courses, e.g. ICT, numeracy and English
Advice on setting up a business
Coffee mornings and BME Lunch Clubs
Environmental trips
Training for employment courses
Job shadowing placements
Allotments
At the end of the project, you will have increased confidence and self-esteem meaning you will be more likely to talk to others about abuse. The information gained will give you more control to make informed choices in a supported environment, making you feel less isolated.
Additionally, our volunteers will gain skills that will increase their employability and make them domestic abuse community champions.
